Burtynsky believed his images were meant to be metaphors to the problems of the modern existence. A taste of attractiona and repulsion. His work in China shows we are drawn to desire, a chance of good living, yet unconciously and conciously aware that the world is suffering due to our success. I believe this is true, this has given many people in china a job but the pay for these people is not reasonable. So much work is put into something so small to us, a smoke detector for example. This small plastic object with sensors injected to it to give us warning of when a smokey danger is lurking. Something that can be vital to our lives is created by the battered hands of underpaid hard working person. The destruction of the city itself to create the dam left many people homeless. It may have been set out that this new construction would bring a better idea to the land but for that to happen homes were destroyed. It still could not be guaranteed that this dam would be positive, it was only an idea after all.
